Join us for a special celebration of typography, concrete poetry and the extraordinary relationship between words, art and visual culture.
In Celebration of Typography is a new publication exploring the role of typography in books, art and poetry. The event also marks the 60th anniversary of Between Poetry and Painting, the landmark 1965 exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts — the first London exhibition dedicated to concrete poetry.
Emerging internationally in the 1950s, concrete poetry placed visual form and typography at the heart of the poetic experience. Influenced by Constructivism and Concrete art, the movement challenged traditional ideas of how poetry could be read, seen and experienced. During the 1960s, artists increasingly incorporated these ideas into their wider artistic practices, with Britain becoming an important centre for the movement.
The new publication has been edited by British art critic and curator Jasia Reichardt and features contributions from Stephen Bann, Bronac Ferran, Piet Gerards, Gustavo Grandal Montero, Hansjörg Mayer, Emily McVarish and Piotr Rypson, alongside a reprint of the original Between Poetry and Painting catalogue.
The event at Tate Britain will include a panel discussion chaired by David Morris, featuring Jasia Reichardt and contributors to the publication, together with a display of rare concrete poetry publications from the Tate Library collection.
